The English Department is one of the largest departments in the school. All pupils study English throughout Key Stages 3 and 4. All year 11 pupils sit either Entry Level or GCSE English and the vast majority also take English Literature. Pass rates at GCSE are consistently high, with up to 63% of cohort achieving A* - C in both subjects. English is very popular in the sixth form, with over 40 students studying the subject for A/S and A Level.
The English Department makes a valuable contribution to the life of the school both inside and outside of the classroom, with activities such as public speaking, theatre visits and fund-raising events like ‘Spellathon’. The Library Club runs daily with events like Poetry Day and Book Week celebrated annually with numerous activities.
The department has enjoyed an excellent reputation for a number of years. During that time, results have improved steadily in all 3 key stages and the work of the department has been recognised in an impressive inspection report, achieving the standard - ‘very good’.
